The magical world of bees

Sitting on the pristine Beechmont plateau in the Scenic Rim, neighbouring the magical and untouched Lamington National Park, provides for the perfect location for Beechmont Estate’s honey bee hives. Beechmont Estate first established the Flow Hives in 2020 to produce the worlds most natural, clean and pure honey.

Bee’s have been the fascination of the Estate’s resident expert Bee Keeper, Stephen. Stephen takes regular tours for those wanting to learn about the wonderful world of bees.

Here are interesting facts about the magical world of honey bees;

  1. 90% of all wild plants and 75% of crops rely on bees to pollinate in order to survive.
  2. Bee Keeping dates back at least 4,500 years.
  3. Bees have a lifespan of 6-8 weeks.
  4. The Queen Bee lays 2,500 eggs per day.
  5. To make 2.2kg of honey, the bees must fly 89,000 kms.
  6. Honey is the only source of the antioxidant, Pinocembrin and the darker the honey, the greater the amount of antioxidant properties it has.
  7. The word “honeymoon” is derived from the ancient tradition of supplying a newlywed couple with a month’s supply of mead in order to ensure happiness and fertility.
  8. The worker bee can carry up to 80% of their own body weight.
  9. Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors, and have a sense of smell 50 times more powerful than a dog.
  10. Bees have 5 eyes
  11. When moving a bee hive, it must be the same angle to the sun as this is how the bee’s plan their flight path back to the hive.
